When I was growing up, every kid on the block knew the house rules by heart. There were the “strict” houses where shoes had to line up against the baseboard and questions weren’t encouraged, and the “cool” houses where ice cream was dinner and bedtime was a vague suggestion. As a kid, the free-for-all houses seemed like paradise, but as I got older, I realized something interesting: we actually felt a lot safer at the houses where there were clear, predictable lines. Now that we are parents ourselves, we are the ones holding the marker, trying to decide where to draw those lines without turning our homes into drill-sergeant camps or chaotic free-for-alls.
