It is incredibly tempting to want to “remote control” our children from the sidelines. Whether that sideline is a soccer field, a frustrating homework assignment at the kitchen table, or a tricky social situation with their peers. We love our kids and want them to succeed so badly that we often end up shouting directions, micromanaging their choices, or simply taking over the task just to ensure everything goes perfectly. But by constantly holding the remote control, we might actually be short-circuiting the very growth we are trying to encourage.
