There was a stretch of time when my days felt like one long to-do list with kids attached. Drop-offs, pickups, homework, practice, dinner, bed — repeat. One evening, my daughter tried to tell me a story about something that happened at school, and I caught myself nodding along while scheduling the next day. Halfway through, she stopped and said, “Never mind. You’re not really listening anyway.”

Ouch. She was right. I was physically present but emotionally somewhere else entirely. I had slipped into “manager mode” — running the logistics of her childhood while missing the actual child standing in front of me. That night I realized we hadn’t had a real, uninterrupted conversation in days. All the driving and providing in the world doesn’t register as connection to a kid who just wants to feel seen for ten uninterrupted minutes.
